Thurn Darul is built high up on a mountain, with the gates to the city being carved directly into the western facing side. Outside the main gate is a large flat area. On either side are two massive metal wenches attached to a massive platform. This massive lift allows for dozens of hourses and carts to be raised from the door of the mountain to the from gates of the city in minutes. It is used hundreds of times a day.
Once inside the main gate, the city is dazzling. Most buildings are polished stone, with gold and silver runes and designs inlaid into them so that if you were to touch them, they'd feel perfectly smooth. The streets are wide, and curve along the inside of the mountain. Every few hundred feet, there's an offshoot with a ramp going down to the next level. In the center of the cavernous opening are massive towers that extend from floor to ceiling. Inside are stores, housing, offices, etc.
To a newcomer, Thurn Darul is impossible to navigate. There are over a hundred levels, and each level is the size of a small city. Knowing the most efficient way to get from one level to another is often difficult enough local children will hold races, with checkpoints all over the city. The longest known lasted three days, with over fifty checkpoints.
The throne is at the rear of the city, in the tallest tower along the cavern wall. From there, visitors to the court can look out over the entire city, for a view that many describe as 'once in a lifetime.'
The Great Hall is located directly behind the throne room. It has over fifty hundred foot high pillars, and the entire thing is carved directly out of the original mountain stone, as a single piece. Only the chairs and some minor decorations are even movable. The Hall can seat over a hundred people at the table and is a favored location of visiting dignitaries.
