Dragons are, perhaps, the most iconic of all the magical creatures. They were the first created, and images of them have survived the millenia since the sundering. Evey good myth has a dragon or two in it, despite them never having existed in the Living Realm.
They are the classic "western" dragon; great lizard like creatures with wings, horns, claws, teeth and tails. They come in various colors; metallics, chromatics, iridescent, and occasionally glowing.
Dragon are some of the most powerful of all the magical creatures. With their long lives, they can easily master most magic, making their abilities second only to Umumtu herself.
Dragons are most known for thier ability to "breath" elemental magic. This takes for form of flames, ice, lightening, etc. Really, this is just a blast of magical energy that takes the form the dragon wishes.
Dragons are otherwise incredibly intelligent (far more so than any other mortal race), possess a natural gift for language, and seem capable of empathic or telepathic communication. (The extent of these abilities is not something they seem willing to discuss with other races.)
In addition to their mental prowess, they are physically incredibly strong and nearly invulnerable to physical attacks.
Dragons have the ability to take the form of any other race created by Umumtu and Veza. (Interestingly, this means dragons cannot take the form of Humans or Kivuli, nor any monster forms.) Unlike other races, this is not simple shape-shifting; when in their new assumed form, they are limited by the bounds of what's possible for that particular race. If they lived to the end of a normal lifespan of a Non-magical race, it's believed they would even die of natural causes, unless they reverted back to their dragon form.
Dragons have very few. They are, effectively immortal, and as such can dedicate millenia to learning things. Younger dragons still have many limitations in what they can do and what they know, but over time they will learn just as their elders have.
Dragons cannot stay in the Living Realm (in their dragon form) for very long, much like the other Magical races. However, since they can take on the forms of other races, it is believed that if they take the form of a Non-magical race, they can remain there for a very long time. They still need access to some source of magic, however with the introduction of monsters, that's now much more viable than it was before.
There are rumors of some of the older dragons moving to the Living Realm shortly after the sundering and bringing with them magical artifacts of great power as their magic sources. What happened to these dragons is unknown.
The word "dragon" is Dwarvish for "knowledge bearer". That is the role they played with all the other races, except for Humans and Kivuli. They have had a strong influence on most other races, being a source of inspiration. They are like the "big sibling" to the rest of existence.
That isn't to say they've always been benevolent; There are legends among some of the races (as well as Dragons themselves) of times when they were stirred to anger, and terrible distruction. Such events are clouded by the mists of time, and the details of such stories are obviously untrue at this point.
As the oldest race, Dragons are well known, even by the races of the Living Realm. There are many beliefs about dragons, some of them more accurate than others.
Generally speaking, most Non-Magical races revere dragons, and see them as benevolent protectors and wise beings. Humans, not having had the benefit of meeting them before the sundering have a different opinion...
Dragons are terrifying. I've heard tales of the damage dragons can do, and if Wyverns are anything to go by, a full-fledge dragon is a beast I don't want to imagine. Sure, the other races seem to think they're these wonderful creatures, but I don't trust it. Look at any ancient drawing of one; anything with that many teeth isn't to be trusted.
It is the Dragons that we miss the most of the Magical races. Our ancestors would converse with them on many topics and seek their wisdom and guidance on any and all topics. We are all diminished by their departure.
Stubborn creatures, if the ancient stories are to be believed. I can respect a being that knows what it wants and isn't willing to compromise. Dwarves carry on that legacy for them; someone has to.
Strength and intelligence in a form of perfect power. Goddess, I would love to fight one, even just once. It'd be glorious. Damn.
Have you heard? They recently found a dragon skeleton! Or, well, what they thing was a dragon skeleton. The evidence isn't clear yet on if dragons can even be killed. Or die. In fact, the whole thing might be a scam, now that I think about it.
Still! Can you imagine studying such a creature? Impossibly amazing, if you ask me.
The other Magical races respect dragons, as the first creations. They are known for their wisdom and elegance, if not also for their iron wills.
Ah, our Dragon kin. They are some of the wisest, most glorious beings ever created by the Goddesses. I consider many of them close, personal friends.
...Look, don't get me wrong, they're great. Pretty, smart, can alway tell when you're lying, don't like it when you cheat at cards, etc. Just perfect. Too perfect. Not really a fan. They're just, kinda annoying, because they act like their better than you and the most infuriating thing is, they're right! They are!
Yeah. No thanks.
Dragons are strange creatures. They have cultivated an air of humble superiority, and they are soo revered by the others that no one seems to question when a dragon speaks. I find myself wondering, then, if they don't have their own agenda? They're given such free reign, not enve Umumtu herself questions what they're up to. I just wonder, is all.
