Gnomes tend to prefer working on their own to working in large groups. They are, in general, friendly and very curious, but they don't like large groups and while they do claim Gerel as their homelands, they have never considered themselves as ruling Gerel. Instead, they prefer someone else rule, and as long as their needs are met, it doesn't exactly matter to them who it is.
Gnomes are, in essence, miniature Humans. Unlike dwarves who tend to be fair skinned, dwarves are just as diverse as Humans, they just don't grow much taller than five feet. A tall gnome and a short human are very difficult to tell the difference between. That is, if you don't notice the ears. Much like elves, they have pointed tops of their ears, though they are much less pronounced.
Another area of their appearance that Gnomes differ from humans is in hair color. They tend much towards blues and greens than browns, yellows and reds like humans do.
Gnomes are, arguably, the smartest of all the mortal races. They tend towards creative endeavours, and love seeking knowledge. Because of this, they've been responsible for all the major technological advances over the last few centuries. (Their current project, harnessing "pnematics" and "hydraulics" will revolutionize the world. Or so they claim.)
It's tempting to pain gnomes with a very broad brush. They are, by an large, scientists. But gnomes have made some of the most brilliant thieves, deadly assasins, and calculating warriors. Just because most of them tend to apply their intellect direct doesn't mean that's the only way in which they can apply it.
Gnomes have, for the most part, stayed out of the limelight of history. They tend to simply be there. They see themselves as more of a "supporting role" in the world, than a driving force like Elves or Humans.
Most other races trust Gnomes, though they are seen as a bit excentric, and perhaps a little arrogant.
I'm never quite sure what to make of Gnomes, honestly. It feels like they're trying to disect you with their eyes, and even the friendly ones just overanalyse everything you say or do. Don't get me wrong, they're wonderful... in small doses. Or if you have a puzzle you need solved.
Torted little souls. They dedicate their lives to knowing the unknowable, and yet they will never achieve their goals. Yet, they know this, and do it anyway. It's inspiring, in it's own way.
"Cousins" they call us. Not sure I buy that, personally. They seem to think they know everything, but for all their theories and notes, it's us dwarves who figure out how to make whatever they're working on practical. I mean, I like keepin' them around, but there heads are always in the clouds.
Ugh. I don't like them. I can't even explain why. There's just something about the way they see the world. Nothing's off limits to them; I'm sure they'd kill their own mother if it meant they could learn the secrets of the world. I just don't trust 'em.
