Half-Elves are the result of an Elf and any other non-magical race, where the Elven ancestory is dominant. The child of an Elf and any other non-magical is not necessarily a Half-Elf (unless the other race is Human; Human ancestory is never dominant.) Somoene is only truely a Half-Elf if their Elven ancesstory is dominant. (They may even have other hybrid siblings of different hybrid races.)
Half-Elves are often children torn between two worlds. Physically, they appear to be Elves, though their ears are often more subtle. It is often difficult for a non-elf to tell the difference between a Half-Elf and and Elf, though well trained observers can usually tell from a combination of physical features and behavior.
Half-Elves feel compelled to reject one of the two cultures from their heiratage, while completely rejecting the other. If they embrace Elven culture, they might be near indistinguishable from an Elf; meanwhile if they embrace their other heritage, they will utterly reject everything about their Elven heritage, often going to extremes to distance themselves from anything reinding them too much of it.
Half-Elves have the same Elven agility and precision that makes their ancestors so highly skilled. However, Half-Elves are not know for their crafting abilities; they find their passions pull them in other directions and they are most well known as exceptional hunters and warriors, applying their Elven skills in a very different way than their ancestors.
Even Half-Elves that choose to embrace Elven culture struggle to find social situations as easy as their Elven kin. Instead, while many find themselves in positions of leadership, it's generally their fighting abilities that landed them there, not their social ones.
Half-Elves still have a sense of charisma about them, but it manifests in a more earnest and raw form. They aren't the great diplomats their Elven kin are, instead working better with individuals rather than groups.
Half-Elves have been around for almost as long as Elves have. They try their best to integrate into whichever culture they've decided to embrace. As such, they don't have much of their own culture or history.
The general concensus among Non-Magical races is that Half-Elves are reliable, but otherwise unremarkable. They are rarely a race that gets considered, much.
Most of the Half-Elves I've met are good people. Hard working, willing to put in as much hard work as it takes. Hard not to like them.
While they are our kin, they are also not, fully. Try as we might, we sometimes struggle to understand one another. But they are kin, and we accept them for who they are, not who we wish them to be.
Good people, the few I've known. They know their way around a weapon, that's for damn sure. They drink more than Elves, and that's a win in my book.
Every fight one? They make an art of war more than the elves, but they don't revel in it. Still, I'd trust one to have my back.
It must be difficult to be pulled in so many directions your entire life. The Half-Elves I've met don't seem to complain. Fascinating people. No sense of their own cultural identity, but that is it's own source of fascination as well!
The Magical races rarely have contact with Half-Elves, and as such, their opinions are relatively conservative.
Our half-blooded Elf kin always feel lost to us. They cling to that which will never fully fulfill them, instead of making something entirely their own. With time, we hope they come to stop defining themselves by others.
I forget they exist, if I'm being honest. They don't leave much of an impression.
They're about as much fun as you'd expect from someone who's half of an Elf, but beyond that, they just keep their head down and try to stay out of the spot light. Gotta respect that. Don't understand it, but I definitely respect it.
Hybrid races are always fascinating; but these have to be the least interesting of all of them. If I'm being completely honest, I don't understand why they exist.
